Biography
Maybe not unsurprisingly Matt Small has been nominated for the National Portrait prize. His work grows on you the more you see it, with his paintings acting as an extension of his beliefs and world view. His portraits are of those found in and around urban London, who are socially excluded and without a voice.
By painting directly onto found pieces of detritus, Matt incorporates physical elements of the city that were discarded, making them highly cherished objects again... His work is both abstract and incredibly real and forces us to recognise our shared humanity with the individual in the painting.
These immense 19 colour screen prints take the art to a new height producing an incredible end result finished off with 2 varnishes.
