New Release

BP Portrait Award nominee Matthew Small has forged a completely unique, honest and technically astonishing path in contemporary British portraiture. His moving and textural portraits have gained him international acclaim, and for good reason! Nelly Duff has been fortunate to work and publish editions with Small for a number of years, but (and this was firmly agreed among the whole team) we have never published an edition as technically competent and intricate as this one.

While Small’s ability to create highly textural and collaged original paintings on found materials makes for stunning, almost sculptural works (no canvas here thank you, Small prefers found wood, car bonnets and even fridge doors) it presents somewhat of a challenge when confronted with how to transform this three dimensional piece into a flat, paper print.

Small’s original piece ‘Charlie’ is a collage built of roughly sawed metal and wood, filled with sharp raised edged and thick, deliciously applied paint, so we knew this print would have to work hard to live up to the beauty of the original painting. A combination of raised flat bed texture printing, carefully applied screen printed varnishes and painstakingly matched inks have resulted in the edition we’ve all been waiting to make.

This February, Nelly Duff quite literally cannot wait to release this one of a kind edition from Matthew Small. With more details to follow very soon, we are sure you’ll be just as blown away by the mysterious and moving ‘Charlie’ as every single one of the ND team is. If that isn’t a guarantee of quality we don’t know what is!
